The Mendocino County Library offers free radon detectors for checkout, empowering residents to easily test their homes for this invisible, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas. This program, made possible through a partnership with the California Department of Public Health Indoor Radon Program, aims to increase awareness and reduce the health risks associated with radon exposure.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter any building, including homes, and is a leading cause of lung cancer. Since it cannot be detected by human senses, testing is the only way to know if your home has elevated levels.

Radon Detectors:

  • Are available at all branches on a first-come, first-serve availability basis.
  • Are not requestable, and cannot be put on hold.
  • Must be returned directly to the front desk at any Mendocino County Library branch.
