Literacy Resources

The Mendocino County Library offers resources to encourage literacy for people of all ages, and provides information about additional community resources.

  • Literacy Volunteers of Willits - Volunteer tutors for adults at the Willits Branch Library.

  • Kid's Literacy Kits - Collection of books and activities with a central theme that will help you create significant learning experiences with your child.
  • Ukiah Adult School - English as a Second Language courses for adults.
  • Mendocino College - English as a Second Language classes available in Ukiah, Fort Bragg, Willits, Boonville/Anderson Valley, and Lakeport. In-person and online ESL classes are available. Non-credit ESL classes are low-cost and you can receive a certificate of completion.   • Braille and Talking Book Library - Free braille and audiobooks mailed to and from members. Eligible readers include Northern California residents who cannot read standard print material in the usual manner due to visual or physical disability.
  • Braille Literacy for Children, Teens, and Adults - List of resources for learning braille.
  • Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - A free program that delivers books to keep directly to children living in Mendocino County ages 0-5 years old. Applications are managed by First5 Mendocino.

Information Literacy Resources

  • Media Literacy - Overview of resources related to media literacy by the Austin Public Library. Includes news check resources, online courses and guides, resources for educators, and book recommendations.
  • Disinformation - Guide to how to recognize misinformation, how to evaluate news quality, and fact checking sites.
  • News Literacy Project - A nonpartisan education nonprofit that works to ensure that students receive news literacy instruction before they graduate high school. Includes the Checkology virtual classroom which teaches students how to identify credible information, seek out reliable sources, and discern misinformation.
  • LearnFree- Learn how to interpret and evaluate information online, whether you're reading an article, watching a video, or using social media.

Digital Literacy

  • Adult Learning Center: Connect with one of our live experts to learn Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
  • DigitalLearn - Short online courses from the Public Library Association to help you learn computer basics, email, internet safety, job skills, and more. Disponible en Español.
  • Tech Help Library Events - Several branches offer in-person technology help events to assist you with ebooks & streaming media, laptop/tablet/smartphone help, email & social media, and basic software & internet help. Contact your local branch for more details.
